Spello is a small town, foothills of Mount Subasio, surrounded by the umbrian countryside and olive groves, near Assisi.
Things to see in Spello
Its curvy alleys enriched by hunging flowers everywhere remember of the magnificent Spello Infiorata which makes the city really popular in Umbria. The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, with its Cappella Baglioni, decorated with the artist Pinturicchio’s frescos, paved with Deruta majolicas, and other frescos by the Perugino.
Spello has one of the most preserved medieval city walls, in which you can visit many ancient entrances to the old city.
The Church of Sant’Andrea, built in 200 a.D, also decorated with Pinturicchio and Dono Doni’s frescos.
Other possible things to visit in Spello are the Town Museum, where you can see paintings, sculptures and frescos and gold works. Walking in the numerous city alleys, you might bump into Cappella Tega, decorated with fifteenth-century frescos. In locality Sant’Anna, nearby the city walls, a roman monumental with 500 meters mosaic pavements has been discovered, in the 2000s.
